I have yet to get optimistic/excited about this year. The SIU game was hard to stomach but the suspensions and number of new players makes it hard to evaluate. I thought we played better at FIU and were a couple of boneheaded plays away from a very good defensive performance. So I don't have much to say yet about this year. However, as some have speculated that Wilson is coaching for his job I think there are a couple of things worth noting about him...
1) Even though he has not been to a bowl game yet, I don't feel like the chorus is as loud or as uniform as it was with Cameron, Dinardo and Lynch. This may be fan apathy or a feeling of resignation or a willingness to wait longer because firing hasn't worked in the past. Whatever the case, it feels different.
2) My second point may also be the reason for #1 - if Wilson doesn't make a bowl this year and is fired, he will hand over a FAR superior roster to all of his predecessors (though the roster under Dinardo was better than under lynch or Cameron). I feel like the current state of the roster is as good as it has been since Hep passed away. There are very good players in every class on both sides of the ball and I think (assuming Sudfeld can be replaced with a Coffman equivalent) we could/should be better next year than we are this year.
Hopefully we will continue to see improvement and that Scales/Dutra returning will solidify the defense and Wilson's departure will become a mute point.
