I don't get what the refs were doing at the end of the Mia-O.Akron game

If you didn't see it, it was an exciting finish. Mia-O hit a long, lucky bankshot 3 to win the game at the buzzer.

But I was confused at what the refs were doing at the end. I understood checking to see if the Mia player got the shot off in time and whether it was a 3 (both clearly were).

I guess they were checking the point where the timekeeper seemed a little slow to get the clock started again at 6.6 seconds after Akron's missed FT. My guess is that maybe the timekeeper was a half second slow.

So here's what I'm confused about:

1. Even if say the time keeper was a full 2 seconds slow, could they have dis-allowed the winning basket? Seems to me the players on the floor have to act in regards to what the clock is showing so that wouldn't have been fair to Miami.

As it turned out the shot was released with about 1.0 seconds left, which was more than the delay getting it started again at 6.6. And like I said, should that have even mattered? I think it should have been good even if he released it at .1 seconds left.

2. So why did the refs add .6 seconds left after the clock clearly shows 0.0 left as the ball is in the net?

If anything, the delay by the timekeeper caused the game to go too long. It made no sense for them to add more time to the clock. Maybe it was a half-assed compromise, make up call for the timekeeper slightly screwing up. But again, I don't see where that negatively affected Akron. Maybe the Mia-O player would've felt slightly more rushed, but I doubt it.

I was further confused by the ESPN announcers. They basically made no mention of why more time was added. They also were't clear on whether a basket made with time still showing on the clock could somehow be disallowed.

Then later I heard a couple different guys on ESPN Radio and they were as clueless as the guys who did the game on TV.

So after all my rambling I want to know 2 things.

1. Can a shot be disallowed with time showing on the clock if the timekeeper had a slight delay several seconds earlier?

2. What in the hell were the refs doing by putting more time on the clock?

Per CBS who cited ref supervisor Hank Nichols...

...the refs had the authority to disallow the basket if they judged the clock had been started too much too late at the 6.6 second mark.

Wow! Imagine if they had done that. I don't think that would be fair.

If they had judged it late, maybe a more fair thing to do would be to disallow the basket, but give Mia-O the ball with 6.6 seconds to score from the legth of the floor.

CBS and no one else yet has still come up with an explanation for putting .6 seconds back on the clock. If Akron had scored in that .6, it would have been an even worse controversey.
