ROAD TRIP
For the first time this season, Indiana will hit the road for non-conference play when it travels first to Chattanooga on Thursday. They will wrap up the road swing on Saturday when they head to Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.

STICKING TO NO. 23
Indiana kept its place in the Associated Press Top 25 with the release of the Week 1 rankings on Monday afternoon. IU also narrowly missed out in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 Week 1 poll on Tuesday, as it earned 59 points and sits at No. 26 overall. For the first time in program history, IU has garnered a preseason top 25 ranking as it came in at No. 23 in the AP Preseason Top 25 on Nov. 1. The Hoosiers have appeared in the national polls just three times in program history (1992-93, 1993-94, 2013-14) and marked the first time the program has been ranked entering the regular season.

16 IN A ROW
With back-to-back wins inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall to open up the season, IU continues the program's longest home win streak. It marked the 16th straight win on its home court, as the Hoosiers are coming off a 14-0 record at home in 2015-16.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Indiana's 94-61 victory over Vanderbilt on Sunday marked the first time it has defeated an SEC foe in the regular season for the first time since 2006. The Hoosiers previously defeated SEC member Georgia in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season.

FASTEST TO 1,000
Junior guard Tyra Buss made history on Sunday when she became the fastest player in school history to 1,000 points. Buss's transition layup in the second quarter pushed her over the 1,000 point threshold and the 24th player in school history to do so. The Mt. Carmel, Ill. native has now scored 1,008 points, which moves her into 22nd place overall in the IU record book. In addition, Buss holds a streak of 39 consecutive games scoring in double figures which dates back to her freshman season.

INSIDE JOB
Indiana showed its potential inside the perimeter during opening weekend Friday night as it scored 98 of its 165 points inside the paint. Fifty of IU's 71 points in the season opener vs. Presbyterian were scored inside the paint while it posted 48 of its 94 points in the lane on Sunday against Vanderbilt.

GULLEY GETS THE NOD
Freshman guard Ria Gulley picked up her first career start in her first career game in cream and crimson on Friday night. She becomes the first freshman to start since teammates Amanda Cahill and Tyra Buss each started their freshmen campaigns. The San Antonio, Texas native scored six points in her debut.

SEASON BEGINS WITH A WIN
For the fourth-straight season, Indiana kicked off the regular season with a win as it cruised to a 71-37 victory over Presbyterian on Friday night. Juniors Amanda Cahill and Tyra Buss both scored in double figures led by Cahill's double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds). Sophomore forward Kym Royster finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds as IU shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the win.

DOUBLED DOWN
With her double-double performance on Friday night versus Presbyterian, junior forward Amanda Cahill posted her 18th double-double of her career. Last season, Cahill turned in 11 double-doubles, the most by an IU player in single year since 2007-08 (Whitney Thomas, 12). Cahill has also now scored in double figures in 26 of the last 27 games.

INDIANA ADDS FIVE FOR 2017
On Wednesday, IU announced it has signed five players to national letters of intent for the 2017-18 season. A trio of guards (Jaelynn Penn, Keyanna Warthen, Bendu Yeaney) and duo of forwards (Linsey Marchese, Alexis Johnson) will all have four years of eligibility when they arrive in Bloomington next season. ProspectsNation.com ranks the Class of 2021 as the No. 13 class in the country. It was also heralded as one of the best classes in the Big Ten by ESPN, ProspectsNation, Dan Olson and others.

ITS (ALMOST) ALL COMING BACK
With the return of 10 letterwinners from a season ago, Indiana returns 93 percent of its scoring and 91 percent of its rebounding in 2016-17. All five top scorers also return including all three -- Tyra Buss , Amanda Cahill and Alexis Gassion -- who averaged double figures last season. Buss and Cahill return off All-Big Ten campaigns a season ago and join starters seniors Karlee McBride , Alexis Gassion and Jenn Anderson who all return this season.

HOOSIER PICKED TO FINISH THIRD; BUSS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN
For the first time in program history, Indiana has been selected to finish third in the Big Ten by a vote of the league's coaches and media, released on Monday, Oct. 24. IU was selected to finish third outright by the media while the coaches elected a tie between Michigan State and Indiana. Junior guard Tyra Buss was selected as a preseason All-Big Ten pick as she earned a unanimous selection by the coaches and a spot on the media team as well.

FRESH FACES
While the Hoosiers return their top five starters from the 2015-16 NCAA Tournament campaign, they welcome some fresh faces to the bench for the 2016-17 season. Redshirt sophomore Tia Elbert will finally make her cream and crimson debut after transferring from Marquette a season ago while also welcoming fifth-year graduate senior Amber Deane (Dayton) to the mix. Three new freshmen also work into the fold with Texas natives Ria Gulley and Bre Wickware along with Indianapolis native Darby Foresman joining the squad. On the coaching side, third year and Big Ten Coach of the Year Teri Moren added Janese Banks and Glenn Box to her staff in the offseason. Banks arrives in Bloomington after spending the last two seasons at nearby IUPUI while Box joins the Hoosiers after two seasons at Saint Louis.

MAJOR TV TIME
IU will be featured a total of nine times on national television broadcasts including games on CBS and ESPN2. The Hoosiers will meet Ohio State on New Year's Eve on CBS Sports while ESPN2 will be inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall when reigning Big Ten champ Maryland visits on February 5.

No. 23 Indiana Hangs On For Road Win at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Backed by four players in double figures, No. 23 Indiana Women's Basketball survived a road test at Chattanooga, coming away with a 79-76 win on Thursday night inside McKenzie Arena.

Junior guard Tyra Buss led the Hoosier with 23 points as she went 8-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-7 from 3-point range to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Buss also put herself into double digits for the 40th straight game in her IU career. She was joined by 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists from senior guard Alexis Gassion and 12 points each from junior forward Amanda Cahill and senior forward Jenn Anderson.

IU shot 51.7 percent from the floor, as it has opened the season with three-consecutive 50 percent plus shooting performances. Nine players scored points on the night as Indiana also dished out a season-high 18 assists on 31 made shots led by Gassion and four more coming from senior guard Amber Deane. In addition, Indiana went 47.1 percent from long range (8-for-17) led by Buss's four triples.

Gassion led on the glass with eight rebounds while Cahill added seven but IU was narrowly outrebounded, 33-31. The Hoosiers dominated once again inside, posting 46 of its 79 points in the lane. With the win, IU handed Chattanooga back-to-back home losses for the first time since the 2004-05 season as the Mocs also lost to No. 19 Florida at home on Tuesday.

It was a back-and-forth affair, as the Hoosiers and Mocs exchanged five ties and 11 lead changes throughout 40 minutes of play. Down by as many as six in the first quarter, Buss used a steal and transition layup to cut the lead down, 13-9, with 4:46 to play.

Coming in off the bench, Anderson's post up down low helped the Hoosiers get right back in it as it was all knotted up at 19-19 at the end of the first. IU took its first lead of the day right out of the gate during the second quarter, as redshirt sophomore guard Tia Elbert hit Anderson in transition for the layup. Anderson would prove to be big in the quarter as she scored six of her eight points in the first half in the second and helped IU to 14 points in the paint in the frame.

A Gassion 3-pointer helped Indiana extend its lead to six with 5:46 to play before halftime but UTC used an 8-4 run to bring themselves within two with six seconds remaining. A last second heave by Buss at near half court drew contact and a foul as she went to the line with .4 to play as she sank all three bonus shots to give IU the 37-32 lead heading into the locker room.

Indiana shot a quarter-high 66.7 percent in the third quarter, as Buss floater in the lane and 3-pointer helped her team go up 43-39 with 7:23 to play. But UTC would go on a 7-3 run late in the quarter as it regained a 51-50 lead with 2:28 remaining. Buss helped Indiana close the frame with a bucket and a triple for a one-point lead, 57-56 headed into the final quarter.

Buss and Deane combined for early back-to-back 3-pointers as it led by as many as seven in the final period. A 10-3 run by the Mocs brought them within one after Chattanooga's Keiana Gilbert split a pair at the line with 4:35 to play.

Indiana pushed its lead back up to five after a Gassion drive and a pair of free throws made it 75-70 with just over three minutes to go. Needing a defensive stop, Cahill came up huge with a block but a second chance bucket put UTC within one at 1:22 as Indiana called timeout. Cahill would step to the line with just 60 seconds left on the clock after she drove to the rim and drained a pair at the charity stripe.

Gilbert – who led her team with 19 points – was able to find her way inside and cut IU's lead to one, 77-76. But it was Gassion's baseline jumper with 22 seconds to play that would prove to be a game winner as McKenzie Arena held its collective breath when the Mocs would fire off a last chance half court attempt that hit the rim but fell the other way for the Indiana win.

IU's first road trip of the season continues when it travels to Western Kentucky on Saturday. Game time is set for 3 p.m. ET inside E.A. Diddle Arena.

IUWBB: No. 23 Indiana holds off Chattanooga, 79-76

No. 23 Indiana (3-0) pulled out a 79-76 win on the road at Chattanooga on Thursday, handing the Mocs their fourth home loss in five years.

Tyra Buss led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Alexis Gassion, with 15, and Amanda Cahill and Jenn Anderson, each with 12, also finished in double figures for the Hoosiers.

Chattanooga (1-2) trailed 75-70 with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter and made a run to cut it to 77-76 with 44 seconds remaining. But a jumper by Gassion with 22 seconds extended the lead back out to three, and the Mocs turned the ball over on their next possession. Four seconds remained when Chattanooga rebounded the second of two misses by Gassion at the free throw line, but a rushed 3 at the buzzer rimmed out.

IU just made more shots than the Mocs. The Hoosiers hit 51.7 percent from the field, including 8-of-17 from 3, while Chattanooga made 46.8 percent from the field and 8-of-20 from 3.

It was a close game throughout, with each team holding a lead in the first half. Chattanooga went up by as many as six in the first quarter. IU led by eight in the second quarter on a bucket by Anderson with 4:03 left.

Each team went on runs to make it close, however. It was tied 19-all at the end of the first, and Anderson’s second-quarter bucket was followed by an 8-2 run for the Mocs, including a baseline jumper by Jasmine Joyner with six seconds left in the half.

But Lakelyn Bouldin was called for a foul on Buss’ 3-point heave with .4 seconds left, and the junior point guard hit all three free throws to make it 37-32 at half.

Chattanooga tied it quickly in the third quarter, though. Twelve seconds in, Keiana Gilbert hit a jumper. Kym Royster then picked up her third foul a minute later and slammed the ball; the sophomore forward was called for a technical, and the Mocs made 3-of-4 free throws to tie it at 37-all.

But the Hoosiers played the frontrunners for most of the night. A trey by Buss and a Cahill layup built the lead back up to 45-39 with 6:36 remaining in the third quarter. Chattanooga made a run to retake the lead, 51-50, with 2:08 left, but IU had the lead, 57-56, by quarter’s end.

Gilbert led the Mocs with 19 points. Joyner finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. This is Chattanooga’s second home loss in a row after falling to No. 19 Florida on Monday.

IU women's basketball notches big road win

by Josh Eastern

With 3.5 seconds to play and IU women’s basketball up three against Chattanooga, IU senior guard Alexis Gassion was at the line for the front end of a one-and-one. She was preparing to shoot when music started to play. She got another chance to shoot, but missed.

Chattanooga Mocs guard Keiana Gilbert got the rebound and hustled up court. She had time for two dribbles. She had to throw it up from half court. It was one of those moments where the gym got quiet. The shot had a chance. It was falling and eventually clanged off the back rim and fell out. IU had
survived.

The No. 23 Hoosiers battled all game long to come away with a 79-76 win against the Mocs to move to 3-0 on the
season.

“Give a lot of credit to Chattanooga. They played a tough game,” IU assistant coach Janese Banks said to Greg Murray of IU radio. “Credit to our basketball team — it is tough to win on the road, no matter where you’re playing. Coach told them before the game, ‘Stick together, no matter the highs and lows, stick together,’ and I thought our girls really did that.”

Nothing was going to be easy for IU during their visit to the McKenzie Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Mocs had lost just three times in five years in that building. IU made
it four.

Behind a 23-point performance by IU junior guard Tyra Buss, the Hoosiers were able to fight off a good Chattanooga team and come away with a win. It was a game that featured 11 lead changes and five ties. The Hoosiers could have laid down. Instead they fought and came away with a much-deserved |victory.

“I just feel like everyone really came in and played their roles,” Banks said. “Whether they played a little or a lot, everyone came in and gave us
something.”

IU Coach Teri Moren said she was expecting a “dogfight” before the game. All game long, the pace was up and down. The Hoosiers used a complete team effort to come away with a win in the first of two straight road
games.

IU senior forward Jenn Anderson didn’t start but played a big part in the win when IU sophomore Kym Royster fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Moren said before the game that Anderson or Royster could be poised for big games, and it was Anderson who finished with 12 points, including eight points in the first
half.

“Coach made some tremendous adjustments throughout the game and trusted the staff,” Banks said. “I thought we worked really well together and our players bought in. So proud of the Hoosiers and how they fought. I love the chemistry of the
Hoosiers.”

Chattanooga fell back into some zone defense, which Moren said she expected beforehand. IU was ready for it and used the three-pointer to its advantage. On 17 attempts from behind the arc, the Hoosiers made eight of those. They all seemed to come at big moments. Overall, IU shot 51.7 percent from
the field.

It doesn’t get much easier from here. The Hoosiers will stay on the road and take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday.

Banks said these two games are absolutely the types of tests IU wants before conference play
begins.

“This is why we put this schedule together,” Banks said. “Not only do we play a tough Chattanooga team, we have to turn around and play a tough Western Kentucky team who is an NCAA team and is experienced in that aspect too. This is what we want. We need to know how to play up, how to play
down.”
