2021 IU recruiting thread

If there is an under the radar kid in the state, it’s Jake Heidbreder. He’s 6”6, Athletic, and can shoot off the dribble. He scored 20+ on Bloomington South and held Anthony Leal to 9 points. Scored 20+ on Evansville Reitz and held Kristian Lander to 7 pts. Scored 32 on Silver Creek to Kaufman’s 21. He thoroughly outplayed those guys head to head but unfortunately lost all 3 games by “1 point” each. They were in the Regional with South and Reitz before it was cancelled. I’m not saying Jake is IU material but in a game of 1v1, he would take Browns lunch money.

Merrillville finished with losing record. He’s going to Ball State

I understand that. Merrillville also plays in 4a, so he goes up against better competition. I obviously don't think that he should get a offer either.

Per the Daily Hoosier site, IU is showing heavy interest in Johnathan Lawson, a very thin 6'7" 'point forward' out of Memphis....the article says we will likely offer. Saw some video of him...can handle, athletic, and a very good shooter, but painfully thin.............Rivals & 247 both list Lawson at 6'6" 165 lbs, but the latest #s I've seen are 6'7" 180 lbs...he's rated 90/110 on 247 & Rivals.

IU also apparently looking at 6'2" 170 lbs Khalil Brantley, out of Charlotte, NC....can't find much about him...I've added these guys to the "interested" list

Also...Per the DH, IU is recruiting Mohammed very hard right now, trying to sell him on being Lander's guard partner......he's very interested, but UL & MD are also heavily involved and he says no decision until November or so....

Getting interesting. Lawson comes from a good lineage and has had 3 older brothers all play high-level college basketball. Guessing this means Trey Patterson may be falling out of favor? Hopeful that this doesn't signal IU staff not as confident in landing Kaufman as many fans think they are. Seen many people speculating across multiple boards that Kaufman may be committing any day. Timing seems odd, but IU desperately needs a 4 in this class.

Article on Lawson. Sounds like a smart, high character kid and was Gatorade Player of the Year for TN. 3 older brothers who play/played D1 basketball, including the Lawson brothers who played at Kansas then Memphis.

One of the best posters on HSN says IU is scouting/talking to Nate Johnson, a '21 combo guard out of Cincinnati Lakota HS.......said to be a breakout player, right now only offers are low D1 types but apparently X and UC are also interested. He's got a nice highlight reel--BT body and can handle and shoot.

I saw one Ohio scouting site has him as #2 SG in that OH class...also, a top 5 player in the Cincinnati area. That same site has Logan D. the top player in Cincy and the #1 center in Ohio in the '21 class. Their #1 PG and PF in the '21 class are committed to OSU--Meechie Johnson & Kalen Etzler. The site is called Triple Double Prospects, and it has a lot of good info about OH & Kentucky HS prospects.

The spot will be taken by November

IU is looking at Kuluel Mading, 6'9" 190 lbs, from High Point, NC. I will add him to the 'interest' category.

He re-classed form 2020 to 2021.

Is described as being athletic, eager...haven't seen highlights but probably a raw talent at this point.

2020 is shaping up to be on paper similar to the 2018 class, with the exception of Hunter:

Romeo (5)
D. Anderson (100) , Phin (118), Forrestor (140)

vs
Lander (11)
Jordan Geronimo (110), Leal (131), Galloway (133)

Of the four recruits in 2018, two lasted a year, one lasted two years, and one appears to be a four year player.

I would hope, and expect) that we get more mileage out of the 2020 class. As the 2020 class on paper is subpar to the 2018 class (especially as my comparison excluded Hunter).

One of IU's biggest problems in recruiting during the Crean era was "(1) its inability to consistently get those 30-70 ranked players; and (2) its inability to get consistent production from those 30-70 ranked players. Here they are (using 247 composite rankings):

2008: NONE

2009: # 38 (Christian Watford (four years) , the poster child for why these players are important

2010: NONE

2011: NONE

2012: #37 Jeremy Hollowell (two years - left the program) / # 53 Hanner Mosquera-Perea (two years - kicked off the program)

2013: #53 Troy Williams (three years), hugely valuable / #63 Stanford Robinson (two years - left the program)

2014: #49 Robert Johnson (four years), very valuable

2015: NONE

2016: #40 Deron Davis (four years), but constant injuries

2017: NONE

When the floor is players ranked in the top 150, a program is very stable. Yes, you need higher ranked players to "cut down nets," but 10 signees in three classes all in the top 150 raises IU's floor and creates stability. It also gives you program guys who will be there for four years. That also matters over the long term.

Also, IU has landed higher ranked guys, like Romeo Langford, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Khristian Lander and Jerome Hunter thanks PEEGS for the info

The Daily Hoosier reports IU interest in 6'5" Jahmai Maschack out of California, and Jaylen Blakes, 6'2", out of Blairstown, NJ. No offers yet. They also indicate continuing IU interest in Nate Johnson and Khlil Brantley, both listed above, who have 'blown up' in the eyes of the recruiters.

Todd Leary stated Brown would have gotten minutes on IU’s team last year, while he was a Jr. in High School. I am sure he knows more than you!

yeah, imagine Leary thinking a 6' nothing, not real athletic, thin shooter might have some value! Wonder what he sees in the kid?

Wow Farmer in the Dell 6'2" nothing doesn't score 2000 pts in 3 yrs and avg over 7 assit this yr and missed 8 1/2 games his soph year plus maybe up 4 games this year even if he was playing against mostly nothing Farmers!LOL

Do you realize how badly you moved the goalposts here? You counted only guys ranked 30-70 for Crean and then moved it to top 150 for Archie.

How many guys has Archie landed in the 30-70 range? The 2020 class sure doesn’t have one. It’s truly mind boggling how you don’t see the double standard.

Playing nobody that will play d1 college basketball.

A nice accomplishement indeed, but he's not close to the record if he wouldn't have transferred from the tougher 4A division.

Again, I think he's gonna be a really good mid major player, so not bashing the kid at all. Just not on Indiana's level.

Not that I'm on the Brown train.
But he's a heckuva lot more athletic than Steve Alford was..A better passer too..
Shooter ..No.
But if by somehow he goes to Bloomington ..He could .And would play for sure.At lest as sophomore..
He'll definitely be a serious contributor at a MAC or MVC school .imo

I’m not so sure. Steve played a lot tougher competition. Steve literally played alongside and against Jordan.(olympics) Could you see Brown doing that next year? I sure don’t. Terrible comparison.

To better illustrate the blatant bias and hypocrisy on this board, I went back over Archie’s 4 IU classes to see how many recruits he had ranked in the 30-70 range on composite.

He’s had a grand total of TWO. Yes...2. In 4 years. In fact he’s had 2 ranked between 13 and 91. Yet he’s doing so much better than Crean in that category. Give me a break.

Why must you lie constantly? You pull this stuff straight out of your bunghole, don't you? Hunter's, TJD 's and Geronimo's final ranks were from 35 to 84. Additional players IU landed had spent time being ranked within the 30-70 range while they were being recruited as well. The recruiting has been solid and once Lander, (who you guaranteed wasn't coming to IU) reclassifies to 2020, IU's already excellent class will be outstanding class. IU is positioned with a talented and deep roster for the coming season that will continue IU's progress toward becoming a regular Big Ten and National championship contender.
