20 minute Tom Allen interview …

Thanks for posting that. He is always fun to listen to.
I'm just disappointed I wasn't invited to his sons wedding.....( they Never seem to call about anything important )... I could have shown them around Jackson Hole and hooked them up with a Guide to take them up a couple of semi-safe scrambles so they could have truthfully said that they had "climbed" in the Tetons while they were there...

In spite of having been excluded from the guest list (it was probably that comment that Tom Allen jr was "a step slow" that did it 😞), I have to commend them on their choice of location...

The Tetons are one of The most beautiful spots in the entire world and I miss not being back there on a daily basis... They almost ended up being my Final resting place on three different occasions over the years and it wouldn't have been a bad place to have had it happen...

Yes, Avalanche Lake hike is one of my favorite hikes in the world. It is a wonderful place.

We've been planning on going to the Tetons for several years. Planning a trip out west for two weeks is difficult. Do we fly into Denver or Jackson Hole and rent a car, or just drive my F350?

I want to do this before my son graduates high school.

Lake Tahoe, either Cal. or Nev. side and Jackson 'HOLE' Tetons are my favorite mountain locations. Drove out last time I was there. Roughly 9 days spent (non-travel) in the Jackson area. Hope to do it again before I'm done.

Just drive the F350..., and take a few side trips on the way out and the way back (depending on your time frame), it's a long haul but it'll be worth it to have a vehicle you're familiar with...

The only plus with a rental car out there is if you get a compact you'll be able to maneuver around in some tight parking lot situations a lot easier... That'll particularly be the case in Jackson which has become a full bore tourist town...

I can give you a lot more info when you're closer to going...

Do you mean Avalanche Canyon? I've been up thru there and bivouaced under a boulder (just above Lake Taminah) with a marmot (who I don't think was all too happy about sharing his space)... Woke up to one of the most memorably beautiful sunrises I've ever seen...

I'm not saying there is no Avalanche Lake..., in my case I just bushwhacked up to the waterfall, staying to the right of the brook for the most part and scrambled up to the right of the waterfall to reach Lake Taminah in the North Fork of the canyon..., so...., I may very well have bypassed it if it's up in the South Fork (which I'm guessing that may be the Lake that is situated just below Buck Mountains NE ridges...).

I don't know much about the South Fork, although I had my eye on a theoretically "easy" lower 5th class route that starts in that area... Never made the climb or the Recon so my memory is fuzzy about the details... Looked like a lot of loose rock on the route...(from afar).

I'm keeping you in mind for my long-awaited trip to Wyoming, Yellowstone, Tetons, etc.

Oh, sorry it was Amphitheater Lake. Up in the snow pack in June. Past Surprise Lake which was also iced over. Quite beautiful.

You're Right, looking up at the North Face of the Grand from there is one of the most awe inspiring sights in the world!

You had me more than a little worried as I consider myself somewhat of an semi-authority on the range (with some significant exceptions like the Death Canyon in the south and the area north of Mt. Moran...). I'm certain I'm probably more likely a bit of a "legend in my own mind" in that regard... 😉😎🍺🍺🍺
