More than interesting, FSB is certainly involved in US culture wars.
Cancel and woke are only words and labels. Words and labels that elicit a triggered response from the left. So the right holds onto it. In reality, again, they are only words and labels. It's the behavior from the far left that posters like Crazy, Floor, Brad, Coh, and myself find objectionable. To the extent that behavior is influenced by outside influences is a demerit against those who adopt it. Lazy, impressionable people. Social justice warriors who blackout their Instagram without taking the time to log onto a PD website or a DOJ page to see the truth of what's transpiring. They are shaped by MSNBC soundbites. And of course the right has it's own warts, just different. Exclusion, etc.
Anyway, but on the matter of cancel culture, FIFA canceled Russia. It's a hell of a thing considering they hosted the last World Cup. Maybe you view things differently because you fashion yourself a military historian and foreign policy/military wonk - but to guys like me, and I suspect most people, what's transpiring in Ukraine is surreal. And I use that word not flippantly, but accurately. We're watching qualifying games, we see accountants and bakers and teachers outside of the GAP in Ukraine, images of bustling streets that look like our own: fast food restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, all the trappings of "normal" life. Life that shouldn't be able to be touched by missiles and bombs.
The notion of nuclear weapons, missiles, invasion, isn't something we've seen anywhere outside of hellholes that we've been inculcated to expect such things - Afghanistan, parts of Africa, places that don't look "normal." And even then it seems more isolated/targeted. And we're cognizant that there's militaries; serious people in serious uniforms and costumes who devote their lives to this stuff, but again it seems surreal, something that goes on outside or removed from the normal lives we all lead - watching World Cup qualifying and trying not to dry out a brisket. And this strata of people that play war games seem infinitesimal to the rest of us - civilians going about our lives. Like they are in another dimension. And that holds true for politicians as well. That this small body of people can drag hundreds of millions of us into a war, while we are just busy with our activities of daily living, seems incomprehensible in this day and age. Seeing tanks going down those roads in Ukraine seems anachronistic.
Just a long, convoluted rant thinking about an 80 year old man going off script and what consequences it and our politicians, a group so small, can have on the world. How so few have the potential and ability to cancel so much for so many.
It was nice to have a day to ponder what's going on in Will Smith's head. It's crazy to think how lucky we are to be Americans
