Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is being pulled from concerts all over the world. Supposedly to protest Putin’s Ukraine invasion. Good lord, what is wrong with you people! There is a lot to say about Putin, but banning great Russian classical music is not a way to do that. Only weak minded individuals who don’t have the wherewithal to express themselves in other ways think they say something important by changing names, impugning historic figures, spray-painting graffiti or banning music.

You know what is funny, Putin is complaining about "cancel culture" being used against Russia. I agree 1812 is only symbolic, but clearly some no-symbolic things are being hit.

Which raises a question, if people are using cancel culture to hurt Russia economically, is cancel cul6 good then? I doubt Putin is complaining about 1812 being cancelled.

Yeah, pulling the 1812 is not the “cancel” I prefer

I liked it when Reagan blew up Ghaddafi’s Winnebago.

Doesn't Put-it-in own a yacht?

"You people?" Out of the tens of thousands of orchestras around the world, it appears that this involves a relatively few music directors. It's stupid, but take a deep breath. Tchaikovsky is not being permanently canceled.

Do you do anything other than whine all day?

It's wokeness, baby!

Funny tidbit: Tchaikovsky hated the 1812, disparaging it as "festival music" without any artistic merit. Basically, he did it for the paycheck.

(And a handsome paycheck it ended up being.)

Full disclosure: I think it's brilliant and has plenty of artistic merit.

Thanks, I was confusing him with Chopin.

I'll admit, my immediate reaction was about the IU timeout, but it was just for a split second.

And now I've got a Rodeo earworm going. It keeps switching back and forth between full orchestra and ELP.

My classical chops suck.

Yes, it became a great backdrop for some classic commercials… Quaker Oats as I recall.

It has been co-opted in the US as a counter point to Sousa marches during July 4th fireworks displays.

This also reminds me to say Russian artillery tactics are perhaps Napoleonic, still.

I was in a rush to be smart ass, hoping to get laugh react from mcmurtry66, and now I'm paying the price.

I don’t know about artistic merit. I know I like Big Music and 1812 is among the biggest. One of my playlists is Big Music and Peter Ilyich has three spots.

Don't you find the frequent overlap between right wing American terminology (e.g., cancel culture, woke) and it's use by Putin "interesting"?

More than interesting, FSB is certainly involved in US culture wars.
Cancel and woke are only words and labels. Words and labels that elicit a triggered response from the left. So the right holds onto it. In reality, again, they are only words and labels. It's the behavior from the far left that posters like Crazy, Floor, Brad, Coh, and myself find objectionable. To the extent that behavior is influenced by outside influences is a demerit against those who adopt it. Lazy, impressionable people. Social justice warriors who blackout their Instagram without taking the time to log onto a PD website or a DOJ page to see the truth of what's transpiring. They are shaped by MSNBC soundbites. And of course the right has it's own warts, just different. Exclusion, etc.

Anyway, but on the matter of cancel culture, FIFA canceled Russia. It's a hell of a thing considering they hosted the last World Cup. Maybe you view things differently because you fashion yourself a military historian and foreign policy/military wonk - but to guys like me, and I suspect most people, what's transpiring in Ukraine is surreal. And I use that word not flippantly, but accurately. We're watching qualifying games, we see accountants and bakers and teachers outside of the GAP in Ukraine, images of bustling streets that look like our own: fast food restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, all the trappings of "normal" life. Life that shouldn't be able to be touched by missiles and bombs.

The notion of nuclear weapons, missiles, invasion, isn't something we've seen anywhere outside of hellholes that we've been inculcated to expect such things - Afghanistan, parts of Africa, places that don't look "normal." And even then it seems more isolated/targeted. And we're cognizant that there's militaries; serious people in serious uniforms and costumes who devote their lives to this stuff, but again it seems surreal, something that goes on outside or removed from the normal lives we all lead - watching World Cup qualifying and trying not to dry out a brisket. And this strata of people that play war games seem infinitesimal to the rest of us - civilians going about our lives. Like they are in another dimension. And that holds true for politicians as well. That this small body of people can drag hundreds of millions of us into a war, while we are just busy with our activities of daily living, seems incomprehensible in this day and age. Seeing tanks going down those roads in Ukraine seems anachronistic.

Just a long, convoluted rant thinking about an 80 year old man going off script and what consequences it and our politicians, a group so small, can have on the world. How so few have the potential and ability to cancel so much for so many.

It was nice to have a day to ponder what's going on in Will Smith's head. It's crazy to think how lucky we are to be Americans

What does right wing have to do with this? Do you think those who cancelled 1812 from concert programs are right wingers?

Here's an all-time Big Music piece which is probably in rather bad taste but I always enjoyed but couldn't listen to everyday: Saint-Saens Organ Symphony.
