Evansville@IU, Game 3: IU wins 6-5 and takes the series...

Nathan Stahl on the mound for the 2nd game of the DH. He gave up two straight hits to start the game, got a K, and gave up another single to load the bases with one out. A fielder's choice scored a run with two outs and runners on the corners and the dangerous Berkey up who had killed IU in the first two games, but he flies out to end the inning with UE up 1-0. The temp at the start of the game is 40.

Doanes got a leadoff single for IU in the 1st. Glasser singled that sent Doanes to 3rd with runners on the corners and no outs. Whalen hit into a DP which scored Doanes to tie the game at 1-1. Ellis struck out to end the inning.

A serious basketball question with potentially broader societal implications

Can a college coach really fix an 18-22 year old’s shot? At what point are things set to a large degree as to one’s skills so that no amount of teaching is going to significantly move the needle (re shooting % in actual games)?

Can a high school coach turn a kid from a middling basketball player into a good one just through teaching and time?

In academics, can a high school teacher reliably and repeatedly turn kids a few grade levels behind in reading or math into honors students/great performers on SAT?

Where do we draw the line? How much in time and resources at these levels do we expend for a small amount of change, if that’s what the data shows, and wouldn’t we better off focusing on other avenues to help out a kid, player, program, or school?

Evansville@IU, Game 1: UE 17 IU 14 as ineffective pitching and errors cost IU...

This is not a good sign when our No. 1 starter gets knocked around in the first two innings. In 2 IP, Perkins has given up 6 hits and 7 runs to include two homers, 3 ERs, 3 BB, and 2 Ks. An error by Pyne at 3rd in the 2nd, led to 3 unearned runs when Perkins gave up a double with two outs and the bases loaded to a .224 hitter. There's a long way to go, but IU can't afford to give up any more runs. IU got a couple of runs in the 1st on a couple of singles and a double to go along with an intentional walk to Ellis, as UE decided to pitch around him with one out.

Kansas, NC, Duke, Nova

I realize there's a lot of "parity," but that's your most likely FF, IMO.

Houston/Nova is the #1 FT shooting team vs. the #324th (Houston)... that's about five points right there. Gonna go with 'Nova. Sampson is good, he ain't Jay Wright good. Wright continues to small ball his way in, every year. And now he's landing better and better players for this system.

Duke can run with Arkansas. And Arkansas can't shoot the 3. And every behind-the-scenes exec (including the refs) will be in K's corner. Wonder if Scheyer can keep this going... has the #2 class right now with the #1, #3, #5, #13, #60 recruit... um, probably won't hurt his chances.

I think Saint Peter's hits the wall hard vs. NC. NC rebounds (7th per game) and moves the ball around well (37th in assists per, 32nd in A/TO). The odds of a #15 taking down 1,5,3,8 are just unfathomably low. Will watch and would love to see it, but, it's all just helping K get to his 6th title, if anything, IMO.

Kansas/Miami is the closest here, IMO. Both have good inside/out balance. No idea there.

Wasn't the Kansas program supposed to be in trouble at some point? And NC? And wasn't Sampson like the "bad guy" that nuked our program or something?

Woody has work to do.

P.S. Purdue 🤣

Man, Sampson can coach

Just totally owned Brad Underwood today. That team is super fun to watch and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them back in the Final Four. In Hindsight, we were idiotic to get rid of him and pulled the trigger way too fast on something that would have blown over.

Sweet 16 Edit - the man has now coached circles around the Big Ten and Pac12 Champions. Time to forgive and forget and bring him back! He’s about as sure of a thing to win here as there is.

Friday Funnies

A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor’s office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it.

“Impossible!” says the doctor. “Show me.”

The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left breast and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.

The doctor said, “You’re not really a redhead, are you?

“Well, no” she said, “I’m actually a blonde.”

“I thought so,” the doctor said. “Your finger is broken.”
