B1G standings and stats as of 3/28/22...

Here is the link to the B1G standings. I used the standings at D1Baseball since as usual the standings at the bigten.org have not been updated to reflect the overall records although they do have the correct conference records for the eight teams that opened the B1G this past weekend. Purdue won the first game of their series at home with OSU, 7-5, but the other two games were canceled, and I assume it had to be weather related. Like IU, OSU has been struggling to win games early on in the season.

In the three major categories in the B1G, IU is 6th in team hitting, 13th (last) in team ERA, and 4th in fielding. Surprisingly, IU is not last in hitting batters in the conference with that honor going to Minnesota with 41 hit batters, while IU is next to last at 38 hit batters. IU has given up the most BBs in the conference and it's not even close. IU is also last in earned runs given up. Of course, you could make an argument that the SOS plays a big part in those numbers. Individually, Ellis leads the B1G in homers with 11 and RBIs with 33, while Doanes leads in walks with 24. Colopy is tied for the lead in strikeouts with 31 with two other Hoosiers in the top 10 in that category in Pyne and Mathison. Whalen is 2nd in stolen bases and he appeared to hurt his hamstring yesterday and had to leave the game, and we don't know how serious it is yet. Here is the link to the B1G stats with all of the categories.

Added note: We still don't know just how good Purdue (19-1) is although they did win the 1st game of their series at home with OSU with the other two games canceled. They have the worst SOS of the teams in major conferences in the B1G, ACC, SEC, Pac-12 and Big 12, and I'm guessing that was probably by design as they have almost completely overhauled their roster during the off-season bringing in a bunch of transfers. Of their 9 everyday starters to include the DH, 7 are transfers from either other D-1 schools or the JUCO ranks, and that includes our Toetz. Two of their weekend starters are their original recruits with the other starter coming out of the JUCO ranks. Their top reliever in Landon Weins, a JUCO transfer with an ERA of 0.79 in over 20 IP that leads the B1G.

Just starting to go to concerts again. What shows have you gotten tickets to since music is starting back up? In 2021 I got tix to Jamey Johnson, Blackberry Smoke and Straight No Chaser last year and ended up not being able to go to any due to covid issues. Did go see Psychedelic Furs locally. This year I bought tix to Yacht Rock Revue, Flogging Molly and Whiskey Myers. I boycott many of the bigger shows locally because I hate the big outdoor concert venue in Charlotte due to the horrendous traffic and parking mess, so I only go to shows there once in a blue moon.

What shows are you planning to see in 2022?

The 50th Anniversary of Email: How It All Began

We've come a long way since the first email ever was sent in 1971. How has email changed our lives?
email-anniversary.jpg

This past week saw the passing of the 50th anniversary of email. That is 50 years since the first email ever was sent. 1971 feels like a lifetime ago for many, and many more weren't even born then. For the latter, they've always known email to be around.

The first Email Ever Sent
The first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson in March 1971. Tomlinson sent the first email because it was what he described as a "neat thing to do." Many people, including himself, didn't really see the point in emails. With telephones as a way to communicate with one another, the idea of emails seemed redundant.

Because email wasn't seen as a viable communication method that would catch on, the initial purpose of email was for file transfer. Email was a way to easily send files to other computer users across a network, without having to make physical copies on a (gasp!) floppy disk. Even to this day, many people still use emails to send files to one another— much larger files, however.

In his first email, Tomlinson just sent the line "QWERTYUIOP." As many people will recognize, this string of seemingly random characters is actually the first line of a standard keyboard.

For his email, Tomlinson developed the use of the "@" symbol. The reason behind this symbol, which is now regularly used without a second thought, is to literally show where the sender was. Tomlinson also created the fields of an email, those being the sender, subject, date, body of the email, as well as the "from" field.

I suspect that it wasn't too long later that the grandfather of the current crop of Nigerian princes' sent their first email requesting assistance!

Oil/gas

I know people keep saying how unfriendly Biden is to production. He’s doing the same thing Obama did. He’s actually appealing to his base but if you actually dig into the data he’s actually approved more permits than trump did and it’s not even close. Get ready for another boom.

Saturday Recruit Watching (State Finals)

Finally made it over to Gainbridge Fieldhouse to watch the evening portion of the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals which features the Class 3A Championship game at 6 pm followed by the Class 4A Championship game around 8:15 pm.

Earlier today, North Daviess defeated Lafayette Central Catholic in double OT to win the Class 1A Championship and Providence won the Class 2A Championship defeating Central Noble in the process.

The Class 3A Championship will feature Beech Grove (21-6) versus Mishawaka Marian (24-3). Both schools are led by two outstanding power forwards each with Anthony Ball (BG) and Kaleo Kakalia (MM).

The Class 4A Championship which feature a huge clash of dominant schools as undefeated Chesterton (29-0) will face the stacked team of Cathedral (25-6). Obviously the name that we are more focused on here is Cathedral's Xavier Booker (2023, PF) who #iubb has made one of their top priorities trying to fill the 2023 recruiting class. I have will have more in depth notes on Booker's performance in this thread once the 4A Finals gets going.

The High School season is about to wrap up in the next few hours and we have two very good games to end it on coming up in less than an hour!

Follow me here and on Twitter @KylerStaley for live coverage throughout.
