Malik Reneau note (Wednesday)

2022 five-star forward Malik Reneau de-committed from Florida on Tuesday after Mike White left the Gators for the Georgia head coaching opening.

Indiana was involved with his recruitment the first go-around.

News came out today that former Florida assistant Erik Pastrana will follow White to UGA. Pastrana was the lead recruiter in Reneau's recruitment.

Checking in with a few people yesterday and a few notes came about it... just passing along and I don't think this will be a recruitment that ends asap but I think there are a clear 3-4 programs that are involved and that could be all that stays involved.

Miami (FL) will most likely be an option. He is from Miami originally and attends Montverde (FL) currently. He likes the state of Florida. Their Sweet 16 run this season is obviously big for the future of the program and should have a lot of open space next season on its roster.

Georgia should be a player as well with part of the coaching staff in place, including Pastrana who is a big piece to the puzzle here.

Indiana is going to be in play. It recruited him hard the first time and will do so the same now. Obviously with Montverde teammate Jalen Hood-Schifino coming next year to Indiana, that is a huge piece as well. His ability to recruit for Indiana in person is big. Indiana also has the space widely available in its front court next year -- or is expected to. Reneau is that ideal versatile forward that Mike Woodson and Indiana are going to try and attract.

I wouldn't expect Florida to be a huge player in this recruitment moving forward. Florida State could be involved again and should be a team to watch too with its ability to produce some talented wings/forwards over the last 3-5 years.

Like I said yesterday and above, there will probably be more teams to pop up, but this is a good group to look at. Also, don't expect a decision right now but it's a recruitment that won't be spread out a long time.

IU WBB Recruiting/Portal options

So with this past season coming to an end, I know the women's team has a few commits lined up already in Lexxus Bargirlesser from MI (top 70 recruit), Yarden Garzon, one of the top European players who has played well for the Israeli U20 team in the past and 6-2 Lilly Meister from Minnesota.

With that, there are still several spots available and I noticed last night that Sydney Parrish from Oregon (and HSE for HS) entered the portal, and a top 100 kid from Ohio who we had previously offered de-committed from West Virginia. Curious to see how involved we get with either of these two, as I would LOVE to see Parrish return to Indiana!

News to feed your soul - if you do not have dinner plans for tonight...

Jersey Mike's is giving 100% of all sales today, nationwide, to the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. The total is estimated to be over $10 million. However, based on a conversation with my wife just now, they may have underestimated the total. She just picked up our dinner and not only were there 12 cars in line, the parking lot was completely full. Don't know why, but things like this really get to me. I'm cutting onions as I type this.

Looking at college basketball big picture

Reading about the run that St Peters made: Holloway's salary was something like $260,000 a year. Calipari's $7+ million salary is larger that the athletic department budget of St. Peters.

For the past 20 years IU has been ratcheting up all coaching salaries in order to remain competitive. Crean and Archie were paid many millions of dollars to be fired for performing well below expectations. Woody is now being paid comparable money to right the sinking ship. Pragmatically IU did not have a choice.
Dane Fife was making about $350,000, the other coaches didn't listen to him and now he is going to be paid another years salary to go away.
Private financing groups are now popping up so that student athletes can be compensated more fairly. Some might get $10,000 but some will make closer to $500,000 or more.
And how is this being financed? In part by asking you for donations! And by raising the cost of a college education. Thank God two guys ponied up $10 million for Archie so that he can now be paid to fail at Rhode Island. His new contract is back-ended do that he can double-dip.hetting paid by both schools.

If I recall correctly, IU athletics lost $25 million for the most recent Covid year. So my question is: Where does this end?

I think this that college athletics is now officially broken. Don't get me started on AAU basketball. Also it's just a matter of time before schools have an epiphany and give substantial college credit to athletes for being on a team. Maybe it's time to start following the G-league.

Transfer Rules Question

I found this online and if reading it literally, it would appear all players may transfer "once" without sitting out a year. Is that it? No other stipulations at the conference level? For example, I know the SEC was talking about not allowing players to transfer between conference schools but perhaps that was just being discussed? With NIL, these players have a chance to make pay dirt twice. Of course in the open market, the player can leverage existing NIL deals with current school when other schools come calling for the transfer offer. All of this for lack of a better word is very "interesting". That said here is what I found online for current NCAA rules relative to transferring. Can anyone add more clarity / depth to what else this may entail from a "rules" perspective? Thanks.
