In the 1st, Perkins got the side out in order with a K to start the game, a flyout, and a foul-out.

In IU's 1st, Doanes, Glasser and Whalen all flied out to RF as IU goes down in order also.

In the T2nd, like in the 1st, Perkins put them down in order again with a K, a ground out, and another K. Perkins has recorded six outs with 3 Ks on just 17 pitches so far.

In IU's 2nd, Ellis and Tibbetts both grounded out, and Pyne lined out as both teams have yet to have a batter reach base so far.

In XU 3rd, the leadoff hitter walked on a 3-2 count, a failed pickoff attempt put the runner on 2nd with an error charged to Perkins, a wild pitch put the runner on 3rd with no outs. Perkins got a K for the 1st out with a man still on 3rd. XU scored on SF to RF where it looked like Colopy had thrown the runner out at the home plate, but ump called him safe when the runner slid around Ellis. According to the folks calling the game, it looked like Ellis had tagged him before he touched base. I don't know how many walks have scored on us this season so far, but it's been a bunch. A flyout ended the inning for XU, with the run unearned.

In IU's 3rd, Colopy led off with a K, Jessee popped out, and Mathison fouled out to SS. IU has gone down in order for three straight innings now and the XU pitcher doesn't have great numbers. The top of the order will be up for IU in the 4th for the second go-around with the batting order.

In XU's 4th, a flyout, ground out, and walk put a man on with two outs, and a K ended XU's half of the inning.

In IU's 4th, the top of the order was up for the 2nd go-around. Doanes led off with a walk for IU's 1st base runner of the game. Glasser flied out to the CF wall that moved Doanes to 2nd with one out. Another walk put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Ellis grounded into a fielder's choice at 2nd, to put runners on the corners with two outs. Tibbetts walked to load the bases with two outs. Pyne walked to score IU's first run to tie it at 1-1. A force out at 3rd ended the inning. Neither team has a hit through four innings so far.

In XU's 5th, a pop out and two Ks ended XU's half of the inning. Perkins' PC is just 60 through five innings and he has 7 Ks so far.

In IU's 5th, Xavier went to their bullpen to bring in LHP Jack Lynch who has 8 IP and an ERA of 3.38. Lynch promptly hit Jessee to lead off the inning. Mathison flied out for the 1st out with Jessee remaining at 1st and the top of the order up for the third go-around. A bad throw by the catcher went into CF as Jessee stole 2nd and reached 3rd on the bad throw, but Doanes struck out for the 2nd out, and Glasser flied out to end the inning. There are still no hits in the game by either team.

In the 6th, a K, a walk and a single, the first hit of the game, put men on the corners with one out. A wild pitch by Perkins that hit the plate resulted in a run scoring from third. Two WPs by Perkins have been instrumental in both runs scored by XU today. With a man on 2nd, a K got the 2nd out. A pop out ended the inning with no further damage done. XU leads 2-1.

In IU's 6th, Whalen reached on a fielding error, and Ellis and Tibbetts struck out for two outs. Whalen stole 2nd with two outs. Pyne then homered to left field (417 ft.) to give IU the lead at 3-2 with two outs which was IU's first hit of the game. Colopy then singled, but Jessee struck out to end the inning with IU up 3-2.

In the T7th, Perkins is still on the mound with a 79 PC, and he gave up a leadoff double which chased Perkins. RHP Reese Sharp came in with 15.1 IP and an ERA of 7.04. Sharp has 23 Ks which is something they need here with a man on 2nd and no outs. A ground out moved the runner to 3rd with one out. A double tied the game with a man on 2nd and one out with the earned run charged to Perkins. A single to CF put runners on the corners with one out. A bunt resulted in the 2nd out with runners on 2nd and 3rd and a 3-run homer to left field put XU up 6-3 with still two outs. Most of the damage was done by the bottom half of the order for XU with the leadoff hitter finishing it off with the homer.

In IU's 7th, Mathison led off with an infield hit. XU went to their bullpen again bringing in Jonathan Kelly with 9 IP and an ERA of 7.00. Doanes then walks to put men on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Our No. 2 thru 5 hitters are 0-10 at the plate so far in the game and that is where we are at in the order. Glasser walked to load the bases with no hits. XU goes to the bullpen again to bring in RHP Jared Gadd with 13.1 IP and an ERA of 5.40. A fielder's choice got Doanes at 3rd with Mathison scoring to make it 6-4 with men on 1st and 2nd with one out and Ellis up. Ellis, who had been quiet at the plate up until now, singled up the middle to score Glasser from 2nd and put runners on the the corners with one out and the score 6-5. A passed ball ties the game at 6-6 with Whalen coming in to score. Ellis moved to 2nd on the passed ball with one out. Tibbetts struck out for the 2nd out. Pyne grounded out to end the inning with the game tied.

In the 8th, with Sharp still on the mound, the leadoff hitter reached with a single. Another base hit put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. XU brought in a pinch hitter who was probably a good bunter and he did just that moving runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out. A ground out gave XU the lead at 7-6 with two outs. A wild pitch sent a runner on 2nd to 3rd and an error on Ellis on the throw down to 3rd allowed the runner to score to make it 8-6. Modugno came in to replace Sharp and he advanced the man on 1st to 2nd with a wild pitch. An infield single put men on the corners with two outs, and a ground out ended their half of the inning.

In IU's 8th, Colopy got a leadoff single and was out at 2nd on a fielder's choice with Jessee reaching 1st. Mathison struck out for the 2nd out. An infield single put men on 1st and 2nd with two outs. A flyout by Glasser ended the inning and IU is down to their final three outs.

In the 9th, a one-out solo homer off Modugno made it 9-6 with IU coming up and needing a big inning with just three outs to do it in.

In IU's 9th, two walks sandwiched around a ground out put runners on the corners with one out and gives IU a chance to do something in their last at bats. Tibbets stole 2nd and a ground out scored Whalen from 3rd, as Tibbetts moved on to 3rd to make it 9-7 with two outs. Colopy struck out to end the game.

We got a good pitching performance by Perkins who went 6 IP and gave up two earned runs while striking out nine, but his two wild pitches hurt and our bats were just too quiet through six innings, unlike the UK game. Errors and wild pitches contributed to early Xavier runs and our bullpen coughed up six earned runs over the last three innings with Sharp having a really bad outing in relief as he went 1.2 IP, 5 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 BB, 1 WP, and 1 K. Two of his 5 hits were a double and HR. Modugno went 1.1 IP and gave up a homer for the final run by XU. About the only thing our pitching didn't do in this game was hit a batter.

Here's the game recap with a link to the box score. I still haven't seen who they are going to start in game 2 and they used Modugno for 1.1 IP today so I assume he has been sent to the bullpen.

I am sorry but Glant has got to go after this season at the latest if not earlier. I don't care that this is his first year. When every pitcher who was good last year has been awful this year he is doing something wrong. Every pitcher does not get worse unless the new guy has done something very wrong and clearly he has. IU has had really good pitching for years until now and Glant is the only change, so I have to assume whatever he is doing is not working.

I can already tell you this was a horrible hire that needs to be corrected quickly if we don't want the program to fade into irrelevance
