Let me be clear (disclaimer)-

I’m not saying that folks here have used or have endorsed the use of the N word. I HAVE seen a fairly permissive attitude towards racist words/behavior from SOME of those from the right on this board. It tends to track/correlate with the support of a certain president. A serious lack of empathy/understanding of what it’s like to be anything other than white subsists here at times. I’m a white guy- but I’ve got two mixed kids. Let’s just say my eyes have been opened.

I wish I could say I was surprised. But I’m not. I’m more disappointed than anything. I thought we were farther along in race relations as a country. And then Trump got elected.

Again, I’m pretty sure you guys all know my stance on racism. Not calling it out is allowing it to exist, and even thrive. You HAVE to treat it with zero tolerance, or it’ll continue to happen.

And please everyone, let’s be mature about this thread. It’s worthy of discussion, and I really hope it doesn’t devolve into a compete chit show.

I’m interested in how these stats can be explained- again, please, NO poo flinging.

One note- in 2006, folks that identified as either being a democrat or republican were very close to being even in terms of thinking the “N” word as offensive (55% D to 49% R). Now, those figures are 75% D and 43% R. LOTS of movement on the D side, and regression on the R side (but not by a whole lot).

Most Trump voters don’t think using the n-word is racist, or even offensive, poll indicates
Alexandra HutzlerOn 8/30/18 at 3:47 PM

An overwhelming majority of Donald Trump voters don't think that using the n-word makes white people racist and less than half think the slur is offensive, according to a new poll.

A combination of two polls conducted over the past two weeks found that only 18 percent of Trump voters believe using the racial epithet makes white people racist and just 42 percent find the term offensive. On the other side of the aisle, more than three-quarters of Hillary Clinton voters said that the n-word is offensive and racist.

Over 70 percent of Trump supporters indicated that they would still cast their vote for a political candidate even if they had said the n-word. By contrast, nearly 90 percent of Clinton voters say it would deter them from supporting a candidate if they had used the slur before.

The findings, reported by The Washington Post, were part of two different polls conducted by YouGov and The Economist as well as Huffpost during the week of August 14 to August 21.

The political debate on the n-word has grown increasingly bipartisan over the past few years. In 2006 a CNN/ORC poll showed that 55 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans viewed the term as offensive. But now that gap has widened to a 32 point margin in 2018, as 75 percent of Democrats and 43 percent of Republicans said the n-word was derogatory.

The findings came as rumors swirl that the president has used the n-word before and done so on tape. Omarosa Manigault Newman, a former White House aide whose book released earlier this month has set off a firestorm of controversy surrounding the Trump administration, alleged that tapes from the reality show Trump hosted, The Apprentice, prove the president's usage of the racial epithet.

The president has denied those accusations, tweeting: "I don't have that word in my vocabulary and never have. She made it up."

Trump later called Manigault Newman "that dog" in another social media post, sparking criticism for the insulting comment and its racial undertones. Trump has also come under fire for attacking prominent black celebrity figures, including LeBron James and protesting NFL players.

The poll also came just days after a Republican candidate for governor in Florida, Ron DeSantis, used the phrase "monkey this up" when talking about voting for his black Democratic opponent.

Andrew Gillum, at whom the racial slur was directed, responded that DeSantis used the comment to "incite" his voter base. If elected in November, Gillum will become the first black governor in Florida's history.

A serious lack of empathy/understanding of what it’s like to be anything other than white subsists here at times.
The lack of interest or any empathy is a discouraging and telling reality and it makes the poll results possible.

You should listen to this one to the end:

Good thing the last president improved race relations so drastically.

I agree. The oppressed white men didn't really move up the food chain as much as they had liked, under the previous regime -- many people would say it was White genocide/ ethnic cleansing.

Fortunately, they are well on the way up now -- making up for the lost generations ...all within 20 months. Fantastic news.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Hmm, sounds like identity politics...

Just thought I would beat those prone to interject that to the punch

I am sure his kids are proud of him. 'That's my dad!'

Btw. I don't ever remember seeing see a DeSantis on the Mayflower manifest/registry?

This is going to be a problem for him. Those conferences have most of the nutjobs on the right in attendance. It’s pretty clear he’s at least sympathetic to white nationalism and anti-Muslim ideas. Or he wouldn’t be at those events. It’s pretty simple.

The Trump era had unleashed these whack jobs. We have to keep reminding people that this isn’t normal- pretty far from it.

Any chance you could cite some objective sources like academic studies for your observation/opinion?

beyond ridiculous post.

in a nation of 300 plus million, people not known to the area get the police called on them every day, always have.

i have had the cops called on me, just for being a stranger in the area and walking down the street.

only difference today is, if some person calls the cops on a black person now days anywhere in the US, it's suddenly national news all blown up everywhere.

when the cops were called on me just for being a stranger in the neighborhood walking down the street, i had a talk with the cop who responded.

he said they get X number of calls all the time like that, in many areas, and it's virtually always the same person on any street who are doing all the calling.

yes, some people of all races are racist.

some people just have a very happy trigger finger on calling the cops, and or freak easily.

everyone has stuff they didn't deserve happen to them.

when it happens, we struggle to think of why, but the "why" is often not as easily discernible as many want to assume.

also, i'm guessing there is often a back story as well, but we never get that from the media.

I would rephrase that (bold) sentence otherwise folks here may think you are on some sort of registry.
Just sayin'...

The new normal is to call 911 whenever you see a black child or adult anywhere you deem inappropriate. That's the America blacks face under Trump. Whereas police and the military potentially put their lives on the line any time they don their uniform (or even when they don't), blacks put their lives on the line any time in America, in their home or not. The military are there to fight for our freedom but haven't fought in a declared war since WWII. Blacks have to fight that war every day of their born lives here at home in the United States of America, the Land of the Free.

Go figure.
This is sub par trolling right here.

Hey, you even got a couple of likes.:D

This story makes little sense (like when you said the same person is doing all the calling in many areas on any street), and is only slightly relevant. What does you having the cops called on you for being a stranger have to do with...well, anything?

The left is really pulling out the full court press on the "DeSantis is a racist campaign" huh?

Sad to see him smeared like that, because the guy would be a 10X better Governor for Florida than Gillum.

I guess it makes it easier that Gillum is black. The old Obama 2008/ 2012 playbook, like the triple option, if it 'aint broke, don't fix it.

Or more specifically, if you're Black, then your opponent is a racist.
