The main crux of the study the NYT describes is that most blacks live in counties with a significant shortage of black men as compared to black women, while most whites live in counties with relative parity between white men and white women.
The two primary reasons are that black men have a higher mortality rate than other groups, and that black men are more likely to be incarcerated. Between the ages of 25 and 54, there are 1.5 million more black women living outside of jail than black men.
There are other causes, as well, such as a lack of gender proportionality among black immigrants, but early deaths (primarily homicide) and incarceration seem to be the major causes, statistically.
What's really interesting about the study, however, is the discussion of some of the effects of this demographic anomaly, which include the increased likelihood of black single mothers and the fact that black men, having a much larger pool of potential mates, have less incentive to settle down and form a family (and obviously, those two effects are also interrelated).
